CHANGING YOUR JEWELRY: EAR PIERCINGS

Is your new ear piercing finally healed? That means now you can swap your piercing jewelry and change up your style. Here’s what you need to know about changing your jewelry when the time comes.

THE HEALING PROCESS

The key to making sure your new piercing heals properly is patience and respecting the process. Generally, lobe piercings take 2-3 months to heal, while cartilage can take up to 6 months, depending on the location. While you can’t speed up healing or skip any steps, a basic care routine can ensure you aren’t slowing it down.

Your piercer will provide clear instructions for taking care of your piercing in the days and weeks directly following your piercing, including a regular cleaning routine and the dos and don’ts of aftercare.

Tissue heals from the outside in, so after a few months, your piercing may feel fully healed, but the interior is still healing. Lobe piercings should be fully healed in 6 months. For other piercings, the healing period could take up to 12 months. In the meantime, start browsing all the earrings styles out there for your next look.

WHEN CAN I CHANGE MY EARRINGS?

We know you’re eager to change your earrings, but it’s important to be patient. Your piercer will let you know how long healing typically takes, but in the meantime, here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Hypoallergenic metals like 14K gold or titanium are ideal.
  • Look for styles that are easy to change and clean like studs or hoops.
  • Everyone heals at their own rate, so focus on consistent aftercare.
  • Stop by a Banter location in person to get expert advice on your healing.

CHOOSING JEWELRY

The location of your piercing can affect the type of jewelry that works for you in terms of both comfort and style. For example, some earrings for cartilage piercings come with a flat back for a cleaner look than the traditional butterfly backing. A flat back is also less likely to get caught on your clothing, making them a safer choice for sensitive piercings in every area of the ear.

Try looking at pictures of other people with the same piercing to get ideas for what type of jewelry looks best. You might even get inspired to add another piercing to stack up your look—and the piercing pros at Banter would be happy to help make it happen!
